Happy 87th Birthday to our beloved Bishop Daniel E. Hicklin Sr., an esteemed leader, pastor, and visionary.
Bishop Daniel E. Hicklin Sr. has always been a man committed to higher learning. He attended the James W. Teamer School of Religion, where he pursued theological studies.
In October 1955, after completing some coursework, Bishop Hicklin joined the U.S. Navy. During his service aboard the USS Ranger Aircraft Carrier in the Pacific Ocean, he survived a harrowing explosion in the ammunition room. Thankfully, the fire was extinguished, and upon returning safely to land, he was so grateful that he kissed the ground. He was honorably discharged in December 1958. After two years back home, he relocated to New Jersey in 1960.
In New Jersey, Bishop Hicklin joined White Rock Holiness Church under the leadership of Elder Polite. His dedication and faith quickly became evident, and he rose from Chairman of the Deacon Board to Assistant Pastor. On July 8, 1962, Bishop Hicklin preached his first trial sermon and officially began serving as Assistant Pastor of White Rock Holiness Church.
Subsequently, Bishop Hicklin served under the late Elder S. Daniels, Pastor of Daniel’s Temple H.O.G.S.I.C. His dedication to ministry was undeniable, and he was ordained on October 12, 1964, by the late Bishop N. Hightower. He continued to labor with excellence in God’s vineyard, and in response to a divine vision, Bishop Hicklin founded Mount Sinai H.O.G.S.I.C. at 218 Springfield Avenue, Newark, N.J., on August 3, 1969.
In addition to leading Mount Sinai, Bishop Hicklin served as the Presiding Elder of the Northern States for the H.O.G.S.I.C. organization. Despite his numerous achievements, he remained driven by a higher calling. In May 1976, he branched out to establish Mount Sinai Alpha and Omega Church of Christ, Incorporated.
Church Biography of Bishop Daniel Hicklin Sr. (Continued)
Since its inception with only five members, Mount Sinai Alpha and Omega Church of Christ has grown significantly. This growth is a testament to Bishop Hicklin’s faithfulness as a leader, his dedication as a servant, and his extraordinary compassion for God’s people. Under his guidance, the church has expanded to include additional congregations in New Jersey and Upstate New York.
Bishop Hicklin is not only a gifted pastor but also a successful businessman with over 30 years of experience. He has owned and operated several thriving businesses and served as Vice President of the Plainfield Area Branch of the NAACP during the 1990s.
Among his greatest personal achievements was his marriage to the late Lula M. Hicklin, with whom he shared 38½ wonderful years until her passing on July 10, 1995. Their union was blessed with five children, three of whom are ordained ministers, one a gifted songstress, and another a talented writer. Their legacy continues through sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Despite facing numerous trials throughout his life, including the recent loss of his eldest child, Elder Danette R. Brown, Bishop Hicklin continues to serve God with unwavering faith, fervor, and a relentless desire to fulfill his divine mission.
Bishop Hicklin’s greatest hope is that Mount Sinai Alpha and Omega Church of Christ will continue to reach the lost and draw them to salvation through Jesus Christ by offering the uncompromised Word of God, always delivered with love.
