Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin skated closer to 700 career goals Friday night, scoring number 694 and 695 against the Ottawa Senators.
The two goals moved him into sole possession of 8th place passing Hall-of-Famer Mark Messier. Ovechkin only needed 1,135 games compared to Messier’s 1,756 a 721 game difference, impressive.
“It’s a good number. It’s nice to be in that company. Obviously, lots of legends up there.”
Midway through the second period, Ovechkin slapped a wrister past Marcus Hogberg tying Messier.
Alex scored an empty-net goal in the third period ‘capping’ off a 5-3 victory. Ovechkin has been on fire scoring 11 goals over the last five games. The next goal scorer along the path to Gretzky is Mike Gartner who has 708.
