The Education Department was held in civil contempt on Thursday by a federal judge for violating an order. Betsy DeVos is President Donald Trump’s education secretary, she did not stop collecting loan payments from students who attended Corinthian College who shut its doors in 2015.
The Education Department just kept garnishing wages and seizing thousands of tax returns from borrowers. DeVos also made budget cuts that took away funding for the Special Olympics and special education programs.
Federal judge Sallie Kim had to finally step in and handed down a $100,000 fine for
Kim issued a corse of action in 2018, a year later and still no real action has been taken. Kim had this to tell reporters;
“Defendants have not provided evidence that they were unable to comply with the preliminary injunction, and the evidence shows only minimal efforts to comply with the preliminary injunction.”
“Here, there is no question that Defendants violated the preliminary injunction, there is also no question that Defendants’ violations harmed individual borrowers who were forced to repay loans.”
Kim issued a written order earlier this month stating: “I am not sending anyone to jail yet, but it’s good to know that I have that ability.”
