London- Late Friday the U.K. officially quite the European Union. Nearly half a century of integration is coming to an end with its European neighbors as it looks to chart a new course in the world.
Nearly four years of unprecedented political chaos was triggered in 2016 with the Brexit referendum. The bloc is losing its second largest economy and a huge military force. Britain now begins the process of finding a new home on the global stage.
“The most important thing to say tonight is that this is not an end but a beginning. This is the moment when the dawn breaks and the curtain goes up on a new act.”
– Prime Minister Boris Johnson
Britain chose to quit the club of 28 European nations and will enter into a transition period for at least 11 months. Britain will negotiate future relations with the bloc during the 11-month span. The U.K. will legally be outside the EU but nothing will change for the citizens on either side.
“We are about to run a series of unparalleled experiments. We are about to make trade harder.”
– Anand Menon Professor of politics at Kings College London
