Ecuador, Guayaquil Prison: This is hands down one of the wildest stories I’ve come across in a minute. In one of the most overpopulated prisons in the world a battle between gangs broke out and it was absolutely chaotic violence. It is being called the worst penitentiary massacre in Ecuador’s history. That is saying something for a country that’s used to this happening in prison but on a smaller scale.
Officials are reporting that at least 116 people have been killed, and 80 others injured. It is believed that 5-6 of those humans were beheaded.
Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso has decreed a state of emergency in the prison system, which in turn allows the government to deploy police and soldiers to penitentiaries among other powers. Tuesday’s blood bath at Litoral penitentiary located in Guayaquil is linked to the international drug cartels who are fighting for control in the prison. Images from the scene look like battlefields, the fighting was done with firearms, bombs, and knives.
It is regrettable that the prisons are being turned into territories for power disputes by criminal gangs. I will act with absolute firmness to regain control of the Litoral prison and prevent the violence from spreading to other penitentiaries.
