Scarborough native Randell Adjei is a spoken word artist and he’s just been named as Ontario’s first Poet Laureate. Adjei will serve a two-year term as an officer of the legislature. Percy Hatfield got the wheels in motion, after losing Gord Downie, the Tragically Hip singer and author he thought it only right to honor Ontario with a wordsmith of the same caliber.
Adjei is a well-respected community activist, his responsibilities will include writing poems, promoting literacy in Ontario, and boosting the province’s poets. Randell is also the founder of R.I.S.E. (Reaching Intelligent Souls Everywhere), a youth-led initiative that encourages artists to express themselves positively.
“There are strong connections between Gord Downie’s artistic expression, and mine. We share a love for the lyric word to bring attention to stories of social injustice, and we have used our poetry to unite others in the understanding of these plights”
Pretty cool story IMUer’s it proves your words really can make a difference. Do you all have any favorite poets? Let us know in the comments section. Please watch the video above and watch as Adjei is honored.
