Asheboro High School, North Carolina: Ever Lopez graduated from High School and was denied his diploma for violating the dress code. I get it, Lopez did not abide by the rules but is it really that serious for the principal to make a big stink. When Ever heard his name called he was so proud being the first in his family to graduate from high school he thought nothing of the Mexican flag draped around his gown. When he was about to receive his diploma Lopez was told; “You can’t wear that.”
The guidelines do say not to decorate the gown but you can decorate the cap. Just stop to break this down a minute. At the end of the day, this should not be such an issue, it’s a larger situation now because the principal made it so. As an educator, you should be aware of how important the flag is to the Spanish culture, whether your Dominican, Puerto Rican, or Mexican they are very proud of their heritage.
After the last year and a half we’ve had as a nation, people need to loosen up a bit and look past a flag worn over a graduation gown. It takes nothing away from the Asheboro High School it adds a little bit of culture and patriotism, what’s wrong with being proud of where you’re from. I get it rules are rules but to deny a kid his diploma for simply having a flag hung over his gown is a bit excessive maybe even borderline racist.
