Missy Elliott Flexes Her Range

It’s been fourteen years since Missy Elliott dropped a project, in that
time span countless Femcee’s have come to follow the living legend, not
many could stand in the ring with The Queen. “ICONOLOGY” consists of
four brand new songs and an Acapella,
Production is a collaborative effort between Elliott, Timbaland, and
Wili Hendrix. The trio mixed with Missy’s laser sharp bars suck you in
from the opening seconds. 5 songs and 15 minutes goes by quick, if your
new to Hip-Hop Missy mixes all the ingredients this genre embodies in that
time frame.
“Throw It Back” Is a top notch record we’ll be dancing to for years to
come. Elliott is on the top of her game, lyrics, word play and flow are all on
display here. Missy reminds us why we were excited for this release the
second we heard about it. Letting her predecessors know if she wanted the
crown back she could easily take it.
“I raised all these babies, call me Captain Jack, sayin,
Please don’t steal my style/ I might cuss you out/ What ya doin now, I
did for a while”
“Cool Off” is another banger for the clubs. Missy said she wanted to
make the people dance, after hearing the first two that’s exactly what she’s
doing. When you first hear the beat the infectious bed springs and driving
bass, I’m instantly transplanted to a house party. Missy rides in the pocket
and knocks out the beat spitting with confidence so much so she says;
“Goin’ hard, tempo 44, feel like Jay-Z“.
Doesn’t get much more confident, when you feel your moving like Hova.
“DripDemeanor” switches the vibe and brings us into an R&Bish type
world. The beat is slow, sexy, and soulful. Sum1 is the lone feature on the
EP and her voice fits the beat perfect.
“Why I Still Love You” is a feel good record telling the tales of love,
love lost, and better off with out you’s. Sometimes we all need to remind
ourselves of that simple fact. The production is the stand out piece, and has
Missy sounding super soulful, I could hear this at church on Sunday’s type
of vibe. These are also the verses Mrs. Elliott blesses us with for the
Acapella.
ICONOLOGY is a dope little EP packed with bars, soul, rump shaking
grooves, and a Missy Elliott at the top of her game twenty-two years after
she dropped “Super Dupa Fly”. I give this EP a 4.0 out of 5, leaves me
wanting to hear more from the Virginia native.
