Newark New Jersey Is Helping Those Who Need It Most
New Jersey’s largest city Newark embarked on a two-year pilot program that’s going to bring income to those who need it most. The program wants to provide income to hundreds of residents that are 2x below the poverty line. On Monday the first 30 residents kicked off the guaranteed income program.
The city want’s the program to be able to provide 400 total individuals with an extra $6,000 a year with no strings attached. The idea here is to help and hopefully spark interest in individuals to get them into the workforce when they see how extra money helps. Even if someone got a job for 20 hrs a week, the income they would receive will help and build self-esteem.
“Today I’m proud to announce that Newark has taken a historic step towards economic justice by launching The Newark Movement for Economic Equity, Newark’s guaranteed pilot program aimed at giving recurring cash payments to Newark residents. Guaranteed income unconditionally gives monthly cash payments to direct individuals with no strings attached, no work requirements, and is rooted in the history of racial justice.”
