The road that’s lead the Bears of Baylor to this title opportunity began in tragedy.
In the summer of 2003, the NCAA experienced a tragic event. Carlton Dotson of Baylor was arrested for murdering his teammate Patrick Dennehy. The Bears head coach Dave Bliss was forced to resign after a conversation came to light of him speaking with assistant coach Abar Rouse about covering up NCAA rules violations.
Baylor was at rock bottom when Scott Drew met with his team for the first time. It was August of 2003 and the young men he was surrounded by were in a rough patch. Coach Drew’s words of encouragement and optimism for the future of the program were surreal at the moment. 18 years later Drew has his program knocking on the door of its first National Title.
In 2019 Scott Drew brought in someone special to speak to his team prior to the season. Fast forward to today, you see the results the impact of powerful words and believing in yourself can lead to. Below is a clip of Eric Thomas speaking to the team about the difference between “Skill and Will”.
Last night all the years of hard work paid off. Baylor handled Houston with ease as they coasted to a 78-59 victory led by guard Jared Butler. The stage is now set for a championship game that has been two years in the making.
Gonzaga has been a staple in the tournament for as long as I can remember. 1995 to be exact. I’m about to age myself here but in 95′ I was an 8th grader at Haddon Township highschool in New Jersey. Zaga hasn’t missed a birth to the big dance since.
Last night’s OT thriller was so much fun to watch and such an evenly played match-up. In the last 59 seconds, we saw UCLA’s Johnny Juzang pull up short catching the front rim and like a bat out of hell, he came crashing in grabbed his own board, and laid it up for the tie.
What happened next was the result of what having a championship mentality looks like. Winning has been in Gonzaga’s DNA for 26 years. When Jalen Suggs took the pass from Corey Kispert and pulled up from nearly half-court the bank was open. It was beautiful, the ball caught the square on the backboard perfectly and danced through the nylon to keep Gonzaga’s perfect season intact.
Was it luck or the result of all the hard work put in behind closed doors? What is LUCK? Thomas Jefferson seemed to understand, he simply puts it like this;
I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.
