Thousands Of Cubans Storm The Streets In Anti-Government Protests
Cuba: Thousands of Cubans took to the streets on Sunday, expressing frustration over COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the pace of vaccinations, and what they called neglect from political leaders. Several called for President Miguel Diaz-Canel to resign.
Special forces jeeps and a heavy police presence were seen, but only a few arrests and scuffles occurred, with no major confrontations. The last two years have been extremely rough for the citizens, for this, the government blames mainly the U.S. sanctions as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Monday, Diaz-Canel made a televised address in which he blamed the U.S. for the discontent. U.S. President Joe Biden spoke about the protests, saying they stood with the people and called on the Cuban government to “refrain from violence or attempts” to silence the people’s voices. The people of Cuba are flat out exhausted of how they are treated by the government.
