*NEW YORK (IMU)A shocking act of violence has left the corporate world reeling as Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot in a brazen, targeted attack outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning. The incident unfolded just hours before an anticipated holiday celebration—the annual Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting—casting a pall over the festive atmosphere of the city.*

According to the New York Police Department, Thompson was ambushed just after 6:45 a.m. as he walked alone from a nearby hotel to the New York Hilton Midtown, the site of his company’s investor conference. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch revealed that the assailant lay in wait for several minutes, making a calculated strike as Thompson approached.

“This does not appear to be a random act of violence; it was clear that the suspect had an intended target,” Tisch stated. Witnesses reported seeing many pedestrians near the scene, yet the shooter maintained his composure, strategically positioning himself before executing the attack.
Graphic surveillance footage obtained by investigators captures the harrowing moments of the shooting. The assailant, seemingly methodical in his approach, emerges from behind a parked vehicle, aims a firearm at Thompson’s back, and fires multiple rounds from a few feet away. Despite a brief gun malfunction, the shooter remained focused, resuming fire as Thompson staggered forward and collapsed onto the sidewalk. The gunman then calmly walked past his victim and vanished from view.

“Based on our analysis of the video, the shooter demonstrated considerable expertise with firearms, clearing any malfunctions with remarkable speed,” commented NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
Authorities believe that Thompson was hit at least twice—once in the back and once in the calf—leaving the corporate executive with no chance to defend himself.

Eyewitness reports describe the shooter as a man clad in a jacket and face mask, carrying a backpack. Following the attack, the assailant fled the scene on foot, ultimately escaping on an e-bike into the serene confines of Central Park, prompting a citywide manhunt employing drones, helicopters, and canine units.

UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group Inc., headquartered in Minnetonka, Minnesota, expressed its profound sorrow in a public statement. “We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson. He was a highly respected leader and a cherished companion to all who worked with him,” the statement read. “We are currently collaborating closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this challenging time.”

Police have since released a poster showcasing surveillance images of the suspected shooter as he brandished what appeared to be a firearm, alongside a photograph of him on a bicycle. They are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the capture and prosecution of the perpetrator.
In a heart-wrenching interview, Paulette Thompson, the victim’s wife, revealed that her husband had recently confided to her about receiving threats. While she did not provide specific details, she indicated that these threats may have pertained to matters related to insurance coverage. However, Eric Werner, police chief in the Minneapolis suburb where the Thompsons resided, stated that there had been no prior complaints or reports of threats against Thompson.
As the investigation continues, the tragic loss of Brian Thompson has left an indelible mark, not just on his colleagues and community, but also on the overall sentiment of safety within the bustling heart of New York City. The echo of gunfire serves as a grim reminder that, beneath the holiday lights and cheer, the dark specter of violence still looms.
