LOS ANGELES — FIRES RAGE AS LOS ANGELES FACES DANGEROUS FLAMES

The Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst wildfires broke out in Los Angeles County on Tuesday, quickly consuming over 5,600 acres by Wednesday morning. By midday Wednesday, the situation worsened as two additional fires—Tyler and Woodley—ignited nearby, further escalating the crisis.

Authorities have issued stark warnings, signaling that conditions are expected to deteriorate in the coming hours, and the region braces for what could become a catastrophic disaster.

Striking images from the past two days capture the urgency and devastation. A Los Angeles County firefighting helicopter tirelessly douses the Palisades wildfire near the iconic Pacific Palisades, a neighborhood that draws celebrities and beachgoers alike. Within hours, the inferno expanded to more than 2,900 acres, forcing the evacuation of approximately 80,000 residents. Among them, high-profile figures like Hailey Bieber, Paris Hilton, and Chris Pratt have expressed support and offered prayers for the shaken community, underscoring the emotional toll of the disaster.

In just a few short hours, what started as a small flame has spiraled into an overwhelming crisis in the heart of the nation’s second-largest city, where the flames now threaten to engulf everything in their path.

 

The Palisades Fire burns a residence in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood. There are four wildfires now burning in the Los Angeles area. They are rapidly growing with the help of a windstorm. Gusts of more than 50 miles per hour have been essentially fanning the flames. So much so that the Eaton fire now spans over 2,200 acres, almost surpassing the size of the Palisades fire, which started hours earlier on Tuesday, at 10:30 a.m. The Hurst fire, the smallest of the three, cropped up around the same time as the Palisades fire, and currently spans 500 acres. Elderly patients are rushed into emergency vehicles to be evacuated as the Eaton fire rages. Locals expressed concern about how the city’s notorious traffic was preventing people from being able to leave. Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote on Instagram: “City of LA you want everyone to evacuate yet you have complete gridlock and not one traffic cop on the roads helping @cityoflosangeles @karenbassla.” Some residents trapped in traffic have even fled the area by foot, according to reports. Tens of thousands of people were under evacuation orders in Southern California on Wednesday as multiple life-threatening wildfires burned across Los Angeles County, scorching thousands of acres and destroying homes.

The National Weather Service warned of widespread damaging wind Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon, with wind gusts of 50-80 mph, and isolated 80-100 mph winds in the mountains and foothills. Forecasters said downed trees and power outages were expected.

  • Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass posted a message on X urging residents near the fire in Pacific Palisades to “heed evacuation warnings” as firefighters work to contain it.
